Drift seeds are seeds that can survive for a long time at sea, floating slowly across the ocean to a new destination. Also, called seabeans, they travel for miles and years before washing ashore. One particular seed with which I share a name, Mary's Bean, travels further than any other. It only grows in Central America, but has been found as far away as Norway.

I hope to find one at the beach this summer, but I think I'll have to travel further south than New Jersey. The Gulf Stream will likely pick it up and carry it across the ocean before it reaches me.
